Here's Loris!

To contact us Click HERE
Finally, we have some photos of Loris who was introduced in the last two posts.

Loris is about 45 pounds, she is spayed and has received her vaccinations. Unfortunately, she is Heartworm and Lymes positive, but she has a darling personality.

Act V Rescue and Rehabilitation is hoping to take her, but they are looking for a foster home. They already have her puppies in foster care.

Fingers crossed for Loris. She deserves a fresh start after traveling 20-30 miles through the wilderness to return to her family that she didn't understand had surrendered her...

Homeless Tanner

To contact us Click HERE
Tanner was dumped on the Red Lake Reservation by a girl who asked the Red Lake family to keep the dog for a couple of days----but---she never came back.

Since that time Tanner has been passed around various homes on the reservation, and when the last lady got him, he was hungry and very tired. She kept Tanner for a month and fed him and then brought him to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue as she could no longer afford to buy food for him.

We were rejoicing when RAGOM (Retrieve A Golden Of Minnesota) once again stepped up and accepted Tanner who is a golden mix and he went off to foster care in their program.

Now we have heard from RAGOM:

"A big thank you for surrendering Tanner (Golden Retriever mix) to RAGOM a couple of weeks ago. I am currently fostering Tanner (RAGOM#12-313). He is such a sweetheart.

"RAGOM had their annual fundraiser (Goldzilla) on Saturday. Quite by accident, Tanner met one of his litter mates, Niji, at this event. We all were thrilled! Niji was surrendered by your Rescue to RAGOM last October and was adopted out as a pup."

And, today we hear of this good news on Tanner:

"Tanner, the 10 month old GR/lab mix that recently came into RAGOM from Red Lake found his family and is being adopted after his neutering! Thought you would be happy to hear his update!!"

We are so thankful to have RAGOM as a partner which has never turned down any golden or golden mix we rescue!

Thank you - Karen and RLRR

PA: Humane Society takes a dog from a homeless man- and won't return him even after a court order to do so

Good Grief! Give the man his dog back! This man lost his home, his job, his wife and family, and now the HS takes his DOG!!! You have got to be kidding!
What are the buzz words the Human Society always uses to make the public think they were doing a "service"?- words like "cruelty", but more and more they are just STEALING people's pets! Is Baron REALLY better off in an over crowded shelter? I think not. Every day that dog is experiencing stress of being in in what amounts to JAIL- Give Thomas his dog back!!

At a federal hearing last week over the custody of on of its dogs,
by John Luciew

Humane Society of Harrisburg Area executive director Amy Kaunas testified that the shelter routinely houses an average of 200 dogs at any given time.

Miles Thomas, the formerly homeless owner of Baron the collie, has been battling the Humane Society for the return of his dog since July 26 when the agency's canine officer seized Baron from Thomas’ ventilated car as he lunched in Middletown. The animal agency said it took the dog as part of a cruelty investigation after receiving a call from Middletown police. Thomas, who was battling bouts of homelessness, was never charged and went to the Humane Society to recover Baron the next day, but was denied.

Last week, U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III halted a hearing on the custody of the dog and outlined a plan for co-adoption of the dog by Thomas and Steve Conklin with monitoring by the Humane Society for six months. After that, Thomas stood to regain full ownership of the 7-year-old collie.

However, Andrew Ostrowski, attorney for Thomas, said Wednesday that the Humane Society is balking over what Ostrowski called "slight modifications" in the adoption form requested by Conklin, who is housing the formerly-homeless Thomas and would be co-adopter of the dog. Baron remains at the shelter.

Office space for Red Lake Rosie's Rescue

To contact us Click HERE
Red Lake Rosie's Rescue finally has an office space!

On the front of my house there was a 10' x 25' deck area that was not used. It seemed a good place to collect junk and was basically unuseable in summer due to insects and in winter due to ice and snow. It already had a roof and floor, so we went ahead and enclosed the area, insulated it and finished the floor and walls. The only cost to RLRR for the office was the wiring of the computer jack, phone jack and electricity for the addition.

Previously the files and computer were in a small kitchen area which was cluttered and took up all the living space in the house. Although 10 x 25 feet does not seem like lots of space, it has made a real difference here!

The dogs love the new area, too. Reilly and Julie prefer to rest on the futon couch and hang out in this area.

We love the new space!

FOR ALL QUESTIONS & INQUIRES PLEASE CONTACT LEE AT lmorrison@theflyer.com OR 305 479 9274

Bruno gets along with female dogs, but probably not good to live with males. Even though he lost his hearing, he still is a great watchdog: he feels movement and hears some sound via bones in his ears. (Just try opening the refrigerator if he’s awake!).
He is nine years old and as sweet & loveable as ever.

EMAIL UPDATE RECEIVED 1/27/12: A MONTH AGO WE RECEIVED THE SAD NEWS THAT BRUNO WAS LOSING HIS FOREVER HOME....AGAIN.

THERE WAS A SENIOR GENTLEMAN WHO STEPPED UP TO ADOPT BRUNO. HE LOVES BRUNO BUT HE IS TOO FRAIL TO WALK HIM AND HE REALLY NEEDS A SMALLER DOG WHO CAN TAKE WALKS WITH HIM. IT JUST WASN'T A MATCH AND BRUNO CAN'T STAY THERE ANYMORE. PLEASE KEEP POSTING FOR BRUNO, WE NEED TO MOVE HIM RIGHT AWAY. HE IS A WONDERFUL DOG , JUST TOO MUCH DOG FOR AN 81 YO MAN.

12-12-11: FOUR DAYS ONLY AND COUNTING! MUST BE OUT BY THIS WEEKEND!

Poor Bruno has had such a hard life. He was rescued from death row in Miami Dade Animal Services 6 years ago and adopted to a family who checked out perfectly in every way imaginable. We were so excited he’d found his forever home. Instead they starved and neglected Bruno so horribly that he was skin & bones, bleeding from head to foot (he had to be shaved naked to treat his skin wounds) with ear infections so severe his ear canals had to be surgically removed or he’d die from the infection reaching his brain. Bruno thankfully lived, recovered beautifully, but because of their abuse is deaf as a result.

Bruno stayed with his original rescuer for two years more living in her tiny bathroom or/outside because that is all she could provide. He finally found what we again thought was his forever home three years ago with a semi-retired couple who adored him. We were absolutely shocked when they called a month ago to tell us they made the decision to sell their house and were moving in 2-4 months and couldn't take Bruno with them.

Last night they informed us Bruno must be out this weekend! We are sick for poor Bruno and have nowhere for him to go. He is nine years old and as sweet & loveable as ever. He follows his human everywhere – not realizing his loyalty is sadly NOT returned. Bruno gets along with female dogs, but probably not good to live with males. Even though he lost his hearing , he still is a great watchdog: he feels movement and hears some sound via bones in his ears. (Just try opening the refrigerator if he’s awake!) We just can't wrap our heads around the fact that this couple who committed to this beautiful boy and sent nothing but wonderful updates for the past three years, can just put him out to pasture. Where do they think he will go? Their parting words to us about Bruno: " thanks for letting us be part of Bruno's life. Wish things were different and we could keep him".

It doesn't have to be this way. Please don't let Bruno's life end at 9 years old, after so few years of happiness, in a kill shelter. He needs to go to a stable, responsible , committed home where he will spend his golden years with a loving REAL forever family. Call and or email LeeAnn 305 479 9274 OR lmorrison@theflyer.com

You are not going to believe this- but today when we have a blog on the pups of Loris---and while running the shuttle for the spay/neuter clinic, I was next door to Loris' previous home to pick up another dog and----here she comes running over to the Red Lake Rosie's Rescue van--LORIS!!!

She had walked home all the way to Red Lake which is 32 miles to drive, perhaps 20 miles through wilderness with wolves. She was very hungry and hopped in willingly with me. She went to the clinic and got spayed, so I have her again.

She is so sweet and now I need a rescue to take her, too.

I was SOOOO happy as I have been looking for a long time and cannot believe the challenges of her journey!!

Volunteers needed for Oct. 10-13 clinic

To contact us Click HERE
We are a month away from the last clinic of the year. The clinic starts on Wednesday, October 10th and ends midday on Saturday, the 13th, so it is a three and a half day clinic.

As usual, we need volunteers to pull this thing off!

We can greatly reduce the number of winter litters born and help ill, injured, and unwanted/stray animals before the really cold temperatures arrive.

Please think about joining us. It's an experience you won't forget, and you will be instrumental in changing the future for many Red Lake animals.

Let me know if you can be there for either part or all of the clinic, and where you would like to stay.

Thanks,
DeeDee

Another cooperative transport

We had another great cooperative transport with Red Lake Rosie's, Leech Lake Legacy, and Bemidji Pound animals on Saturday, September 2nd.

Barbie Olson, the O'Sullivans and Karen were the drivers for this transport.

The following is from Marilou:

We had quite the welcoming committee at Golden Valley with Jenny's sister and nieces and then the rescues coming to pick up the animals! It was like a big party in front of AHS' intake area, and of course, a lot of the AHS folks came out to join the party!!

And Martha, you will be happy to know that your three kitties got LOTS and LOTS of love and attention from Jenny's nieces!! :) and the volunteer from Second Hand Hounds who came to pick up Peck, Phish and Plenty was sooo excited to meet them and transport them ....

and Karen: St. Francis Rescue let me know that they would take very good care of the litter of 5 pups ....

A million thanks to everyone who made it possible for 20 animals to move onto the next stage of their journey in finding their forever home!!

Puppy hug

A lady from Red Lake called to have a litter of puppies and their mama removed. Carol and Karen went to the residence and found Loris and her litter of 6 tiny pups. Loris was very malnourished and dehydrated.

It went well for 2 days, and then on day 3 mama Loris disappeared from the shelter. Her 6 puppies lapped milk and thrived until the following Saturday when they were tranported to Cass Lake where the puppy roundup was being held. Dr. Vickie of Act V was at the roundup and took the 6 puppies and they are now in foster care.

BEN (male) is the biggest pup.
CHESS (male) has cute white toes.
JUNIOR (male) is the smallest boy.
KATE (female) is the smallest and quietest. She follows her brothers around.
REAGAN (male) is buddies with Kate. He's one of the biggest boys.
RILEY (male) How cute is he??
Searches for Loris have been unsuccessful. Food and water is placed on the periphery of the shelter hoping that she would be in the area and maybe come back.

I am happy that the puppies are in good hands and continue to hold out hope for Loris.

Sincerely, Karen

Sawyer is a Boxer Mix puppy that is deaf.  This puppy will work best in a home with another dog, a secure fenced yard, compassion and patience to train him to understand signs. He is currently at the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter on the West Bank, on Ames Blvd.  Thank you.

This sweet angel is a return adoption.  His owners discovered that he is deaf and don’t want to deal with it.  He is an adorable boxer mix puppy, already housetrained.  He would make the perfect companion for the right person who would be willing to work with his impairment by training him to learn signals.  He is too cute for words.  Thanks so much.Brooke

She is adorable. Friendly, bright. I think perhaps she is more Chihuahua mix than Dachshund mix. She’s a tiny little thing.

Milo continues to recuperate, pt.1

To contact us Click HERE
Milo, the collie from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue, has been in foster care with Minnesota Wisconsin Collie Rescue for over three months now and I check his blog, "Milo the foster collie; his new leash on life" at http://milothefostercollie.blogspot.com/ just about everyday. See previous RLRR posts about Milan/Milo on June 12 and June 25.

He has had one struggle after another regaining his health so I hope you all will send good thoughts and wishes to Milo and his loving & patient foster mom. I'll share some highlights and photos from his blog:

Let's start with some photos from when he first arrived at the vet direct from Red Lake. He was in terrible condition: emaciated, infected with parasites, fur matted and infested with ticks, raw skin and wounds.
Shaving him down was the first step. I'm sure he felt better, but he looked even more pathetic. He did, however, bear a striking resemblance to a beloved Sesame Street character named Beaker.

The story of Milo's recovery will be continued tomorrow...
