Beautiful Bear Boelter

To contact us Click HERE
Bear Boelter is one of the reasons Red Lake Rosie's and Friends work so hard to rescue companion animals.

Bear was rescued as a puppy from Red Lake dump and now enjoys the good life in Eagan, Minnesota with his family who loves him very much.

Not only does he share a great home with his family, but also gets to travel, do a lot of running, and swimming.

He loves the snow!

Bear traveled to the North Shore and spent 4 days hiking from Two Harbors to Grand Marais.

He also frequents the Lebonan Hills Regional Park and has a great time.

Bear Boelter has his own facebook page and shows off his beautiful ancestry as a Siberian husky, Alaskan Malemute and Rottweiller mix. What a combination!

We want to thank supporters, rescues, transporters and of course, the wonderful people who adopt animals such as Bear- What a gem!

Sincerely Karen RLRR

Milan, another Red Lake collie

To contact us Click HERE
Late on the evening of June 3rd we got a call about some people in one of the villages that were going to go out in the woods and shoot a collie. A nice lady there brought the collie to Polly's holding pen in Red Lake.

The collie- we call Milan- was picked up by Mike the very next morning and he went to the local vet. He had 250 mL of pus drained from a giant abcess the size of a softball on his neck.

Milan has an infected eye and ear that is mangled. His fur is badly matted and had been for a long while. Ticks were all over his back and neck area.

In spite of all that Milan has been through, he is the nicest dog you could ever meet. He is so very meek and mild, and has a great personality.

We are so thankful to have a relationship with the Minnesota Wisconsin Collie Rescue who responded within a few hours and said YES WE WILL TAKE MILAN! He will spend only two nights here at RLRR shelter and then Nancy O and Barbie will tranport him to Fridley on Wednesday, June 6th.

Almost every collie we have rescued in Red Lake has been in poor condition and injured and neglected in various ways, but Milan is the worst case we have seen. Mn/WI Collie Rescue has taken every one!

Thank you to his rescuers, Trudi, Polly, Mike, Barbie, Nancy, and MN/WI Collie Rescue for giving Milan a new life.

Milan is soon to be a very lucky guy!

Sincerely,
Karen RLRR

Youth Works Group 2

To contact us Click HERE
Youth Works completed the week at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. What a makeover! We had two great groups of students and chaperones who did so much work to make the life at the shelter a better place for people and animals alike.

The second group continued to work on painting projects on the kennels, clearing grounds, unloading food supply, and socialializing the dog and cats.

The dogs LOVE the attention and enjoyed 4 days of freedom roaming free and enjoying the very nice weather and company.

Tom and Nancy came out on Thursday with a load of food which was unloaded by the group.

The Youth Works Groups are from St. Lawrence Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. They are now on the road back home today!

Thank you Youth Works for all your help.

Little Doug

To contact us Click HERE
Hi Denise,

I wanted to thank you again for transporting little Doug to the cities yesterday. We unfortunately had to let him go late this afternoon. The vets checked him out and reviewed the x-rays. One of the bullets was in his spinal cord and the other 2 were very close to his spinal cord. Because the bullet was in his spinal cord and where it was he would be paralyzed forever. He said that the slight movement we see in his rear area was reflex. His lower organs were also not working and he had no control of his bodily functions.

YUMMYHe is an absolutely sweetheart and I am just so glad he got to experience love for his last 2 days. Jenny and I spent time with him this afternoon ...he peed on me and pooped on Jenny :) He gave lots of kisses but it was apparent he would get frustrated because he couldn't get around. In his kennel he couldn't get up and move around to get to the water bowl.

GRASS TIMEi know in my gut it was the right decision but it certainly doesn't make it any easier. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate you bringing him down to the cities and dropping him off at AHS last night. This morning Melissa (the animal care tech lead) gave him a bubble bath and the vet tech supervisor carried him around all day :) He was definitely loved. Jenny and I were both there with him when he crossed Rainbow Bridge ..

I would just like to add the Little Doug rode up front with me from Bemidji to Golden Valley in an open-top carrier so he got lots of pets and even some singing from me backed by the chorus of mewing kittens in the back seat.

He truly was a darling and was so tame and loving that it is clear someone cared for him before he was shot and left for dead. I hope that people will learn that there are options to avoid unwanted puppies and kittens -- free spay/neuter clinics are coming up both at Red Lake and Leech Lake.

Good news update on Big Joe the St. Bernard who went from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue to Pet Haven for foster care. He has been adopted!

NOTE FROM FORMER FOSTER FAMILY:
Joe (or Joey as we called him) went to his forever home today. He has a wonderful family, including two moms, a doggy brother Earl who is a smaller St. Bernard mix, and a foster sister. His new family fosters dogs as well.

SPA HANDSOMEWithin the first 15 minutes of being in his new home he was playing with his new siblings. His foster sister is much smaller than him so he showed his consideration by lying on the floor to play with her and gentling his energy to play tug with her. Such a sweet gentle boy!

BFF FOSTER BROTHER REXHe lives in south Minneapolis near a lovely park and his new family loves to take long walks with their dogs. There will be plenty of opportunities for Joe to meet other people and dogs which is great since he's such a social guy. They also have a cabin up north so he'll have plenty fun playing on the shore.

X-LARGE BED IS JUST RIGHTHe was only with us a month but his sweetness and gentleness rooted deeply into our hearts. We wish him much happiness in his new home!

KY: Dog Warden Charged with Animal Cruelty

To contact us Click HERE

This video depicts a dog in obvious need of veterinary care (long overdue). It was allegedly shot inside the Webster County dog pound in KY. The conditions the surrounding dogs are living in are evident in the clip. After seeing the video and some photographs, the local TV station went to the pound with the KY state police. The dog warden, John Dunn, did not want the camera crew inside the pound and seemed to know who his friends in high places were right away:

Dunn: "You probably need to talk to the judge executive. Or the county attorney."

NEWS 25: "Okay, you can't tell us anything about those wounds on the dog, or the video that we saw?"

Dunn: "I'm not collaborating on none of it."

Good to know. The news crew pressed on:

The outside pens reek of urine and feces...we see it in the cages. Food and water bowls are too high for little dogs. One of the older dogs won't stop whimpering

NEWS 25: "You're saying there's nothing going on in here?"

Dunn: "No. I try to help every dog I can help. I mean I don't know who put this out on the Internet, that's just dirt. They're trying to pull up a lot of problems."

[...]

"People's getting real nosey, than what they should be. Because they don't know what goes on in this facility," Dunn says.

The judge executive never returned our call or acknowledged our request to go inside the pound.

Based on what the KY state police saw inside the pound, one count of animal cruelty - a misdemeanor in KY - was filed against the warden. And it seems he does indeed know who his friends are:

Judge Executive Townsend said that he has no plans to remove John Dunn as dog warden.

And in fact:

One day after NEWS 25 broke the story, we decided to head back to Webster County, to question the Judge Executive about the dog pound. Thursday, Kentucky State Police charged John Dunn, the county's dog warden, with animal cruelty. A day later, the Judge Executive told us it's all a mistake.

Judge Executive Jim Townsend stands by Dunn, calling him the best warden Webster County has ever seen.

The BFFs gave their side of the story to the local news:

"We need a new facility," Webster County Judge Executive Jim Townsend said. "We know that, but we just don't have the finances to do it."

The pound only has eight pens, and many are filled with several dogs.

Also, at the entrance to the facility, there are two large freezers holding dead animals.

"When you come into the door, the first thing you see is a freezer," Dunn said. "That is no good, I know that."

"That is a disturbing thing," Townsend said.

You know what else is disturbing? The Good Ol' Boys Club in the South. Just sayin'.

Compassionate members of the community are pooling resources to try and help the dogs at the pound.

I breakded it.

I'm not an overly skilled computer geek but I can generally get around ok. Today, not so much apparently. In trying to address some problems I was having at the new blog, I seem to have kerplunk/kerplooey'd the whole damn thing. Unless some sort of blogmiracle befalls me, Ima hafta start over, maybe at a new address even. I will update this post with either:

A. News of the virgin birth
or
B. The address of the NEW new blog.

If anyone needs me I'll be in the woods screaming.

Pitbull Burned in NC Fire Available for Adoption

A Mother in NC left 4 kids home alone 2 weeks ago with a Pitbull puppy in a crate. The house caught fire and firefighters were able to save a 4 year old and a 7 year old but were sadly too late to save the two babies in the home. A neighbor mentioned there was a dog inside and firefighters rescued her from the flames:

The 8-month-old pit bull suffered third-degree burns.

[...]

"All this is scarring," [veterinary technician Sandy] Gainey said, pointing to burns on the dog. "She was in pretty rough shape. Wherever you see no hair is where she was burned. And if you look at her ears, they're crinkled because of the burns and the scarring."

Gainey said that Phoenix could lose an ear because of the damage. Despite all the pain, Gainey said the dog is a sweetheart.

Local animal control has been caring for Phoenix but transferred her to another shelter for adoption since they are legally prohibited from adopting out Pitbulls. The 7 year old child has visited with the dog and will continue to do so after adoption. There is a video at the link of this dog's gentle demeanor while receiving veterinary care for what must be incredibly painful burns. She will make some new owner very happy I'm sure.

Thank you to the firefighters who saved her from a horrible death and to the local animal welfare community for making sure the dog will have a chance to be adopted.

Whose Side is Matthew Pepper on?

The Memphis Animal Shelter killed around 13,000 pets in 2009. In 2010, they hired Matthew Pepper to take over the helm. I was thinking he was going to work toward reducing the killing at the shelter. Now I'm not so sure.

This week, the community gathered at a city council meeting to discuss a proposal regarding mandatory spay neuter. MSN supporters far outnumbered those opposed and Matthew Pepper was there. But he apparently did not speak out against the proposal, which would likely increase the killing at MAS:

Shelter director Matthew Pepper, who started his job this month, said that as a newcomer he was there to listen. He said whatever the fate of the ordinance, community-based programs that address responsible pet ownership will be needed.

He was there to listen to people proposing a bad law that would burden animal control, cause families to lose their pets, increase the intake at his shelter and increase the killing. This is not a "whatever the fate" tra-la-la-la-la issue. This is the time for the new director at MAS to take a stand and establish himself as a leader in Memphis with regard to decreased killing of the community's pets. Programs that address responsible pet ownership are good. MSN is not one of those.

Why is Matthew Pepper not speaking out against something that will lead to increased killing at MAS? Haven't the pets of Memphis suffered enough?

KY: HB 517 seeks to establish an Unconstitutional Forfeiture Bond Bill

To contact us Click HERE
Kentucky: HSUS Introduces Unconstitutional Forfeiture Bond Bill
Kentucky House Bill 517 seeks to give "ownership" of animals to third parties PRIOR to finding guilt of the accused. It also seeks to force those accused in crimes relating to animal cruelty to post a bond. It does not matter whether or not someone can afford to post this type of bond, the bottom line is that no one has the right to give "ownership" of YOUR PROPERTY to someone else!

What this bill dose NOT address is what happens to the animal if the original owner is found to be innocent? Do you think the "new owners" will REALLY give the animal BACK?

The very concept of a "forfeiture" or "seizure" bond greatly undermines the idea that a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law; depriving someone (or attempting to deprive someone) of their personal property by their ability (or inability) to cough up huge sums of cash flat-out crushes the 14th Amendment.

Our judicial system is not perfect; however, we are afforded certain protections under the U.S. Constitution. More and more, the animal rights industry (namely the Humane Society of the United States) would have us to believe that animal owners are somehow different; that we are not entitled to those same protections against warrantless searches and seizures, the right to due process, the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, the right to a fair and speedy trial, etc.

Big Joe (definitely NOT Cujo)

To contact us Click HERE
Red Lake Rosie's Rescue took in a St. Bernard mix. His name was Cujo, but we thought we would change his name to Big Joe since this guy was so mellow and nice. We had Big Joe at the shelter for only about a week. He made a big hit with the Youth works groups and left on Wednesday to Pet Haven foster care.

UPDATE FROM PET HAVEN FOSTER HOME:
I thought I'd give you guys all a Big Joe update. He's been a very good boy. He is getting along well with the rest of the dogs and the 9-year-old, and doesn't seem particularly interested in the cats. He doesn't get into much, though I have had to have some discussions with him about how he's NOT allowed to take my sandwich off of the counter.

We have left him in the house a couple times when we were away for an hour or two and he's been fine, so I don't foresee any need for him to be in a kennel. He is still very much in the foster dog adjustment phase though; he follows us around the house and squeaks if we go somewhere without him. He settles down and sleeps on the floor in the bedroom at night with no trouble.

We've been taking after the last of his winter coat with the furminator every day, and he will be going to a groomer we know in town for a bath and to have the matted bits shaved out of his hindquarters in the next couple of days. He's not eating a whole lot at this point but he does take treats and will eat dry food if you hand feed him, so I think his appetite will probably return when he gets settled in a bit. He's also starting to engage in a little bit of play with the other dogs.

As I write this update, he's curled up on the floor behind me next to Mikey. He's so big that his head is under my desk by Geordie; Ian tells me that Rex is upstairs parked in a sunspot.

Kitty transport, plus a pup

To contact us Click HERE
Lots of kittens, an injured cat, Tate, and a special puppy, Little Doug, rode out with Denise to the metro on Thursday, June 14th.

TATETate came to the shelter because he and a small dog were friends and the dog used to carry Tate around by the neck over a period of time causing a open wound on the back. Poor Tate put up no resistance to the dog and used to sleep beside him, only to be further injured. Thankfully Tate was brought to the shelter and Feline Rescue took him in. Shan and Brian of Shan's Shack made the rescue.

Another sad case was Little Doug, a tiny puppy unable to use his hind legs, who was rescued from a ditch in Cass Lake. Leech Lake Legacy had him in Animal Care Clinic where he was x-rayed and they found 3 bullets in his little body. The puppy was about 6 weeks old and very darling. Nancy and Tom brought him from ACC and he rode out with Denise to AHS and met Jen and Marilou. Little Doug is being assessed there and needs all the prayers he can get.

KATNISSPUFFFERRISALMONDA litter of kittens found at a farm in Goodridge went to a foster home with Feline Rescue. They are Puff, Almond, Katniss, and Ferris (named by the students from Youth Works) They were rescued by Shan and Brian of Shan's Shack.

IZZYAnother kitten named Izzy went to foster care with Denise. Along the transport route Karen stopped and picked up another little tabby kitten, named Squirt, which Denise also kindly took into her care.

TOM, DENISE, NANCYThank you Shan, Brian, Denise, Nancy, Tom, AHS, Jen, and Marilou for your commitment to help these animals. We all made a difference!

Sincerely,
Karen and RLRR

June 17 Transport

To contact us Click HERE
It was a rather complicated transport on June 17, but many willing helpers made it happen.

JENNY & NANCYJenny brought animals from Roseau including a dog and a number of cats. Tom & Nancy loaded up the Roseau animals and animals from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue and headed to Motley to meet Barbie for the transport to the Metro.

Meanwhile a metro team of Jenny, Heidi and Sandra all drove from Minneapolis to the Leech Lake Impound and picked up 4 large dogs and a puppy. The metro group met up with the others in Motley, and everyone continued on their journey.

LIAMLiam, a handsome 3-year-old bull mastiff/pitbull mix boy, went to Tricounty. Liam came as a surrender after living as a chained dog, and had a great time at the RLRR shelter for about a month learning to be social with the other dogs and puppies. He turned out to be a great dog. We are hoping he gets a good home and never has to be chained again!

FAWN KISSES LINDA LAST WINTERFawn has been at the shelter for nearly a year and finally gets a foster home with All DogRescue -- more about Fawn's story in another blog post.

PUPSSeveral puppies also went to foster care including Konan, Kole, and Micah.

TOM, JENNY, NANCYThank you to this great team and also to the rescues that continue to take the northern animals who otherwise would have no hope! Also to those who financially support these efforts.

Sincerely, Karen RLRR

NANCY & PUPSNANCY ADDS:
Lots of bright eyes, smiling faces, wagging tails, and purring with these dear critters!
